Choosing to treat your varicose veins is an important step – but what happens next? Many patients ask: How long does healing take? What should I avoid? When can I exercise again?
Whether you've had laser therapy or sclerotherapy, your aftercare is essential for the best possible results. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about recovery – from what to expect right after treatment to how your legs change in the first few weeks.

Here’s the good news: you’ll be able to walk out of the clinic on your own two feet. No bedrest, no hospital stay, no downtime. Still, your body needs a bit of care and patience.
Some mild redness, slight swelling, or small bruises are completely normal. You might feel a bit of pulling or tightness along the treated vein – that’s actually a good sign that the vein is closing off and healing properly. Most people don’t need any pain medication, but if you do, common options like paracetamol or ibuprofen are perfectly fine.
One of the most important parts of your recovery are compression stockings. They help close the treated vein, support circulation, and reduce the risk of side effects like bruising or pigmentation changes. Plus, they boost cosmetic results.
We usually recommend wearing them day and night for the first 5 to 7 days. After that, daytime use for another week is typically enough. Your doctor will tailor the exact plan to your treatment.
Pro tip: Put on your stockings first thing in the morning, while lying down – before your legs have a chance to swell. If you struggle to get them on, don’t worry. We’ll show you tricks and tools that make it much easier.

Movement is great – as long as it’s gentle. We actually encourage you to go for short walks the same day as your treatment. This keeps your blood flowing and helps prevent blood clots.
But for the first few days, skip anything that’s too intense:
From the second week onward, you can gradually increase your activity level. Light workouts, yoga, or cycling are usually fine after 2–3 weeks. Always listen to your body – if something feels uncomfortable, give it a little more time.
Your skin may be a bit sensitive for a few days after treatment. It’s important to treat it gently:
Also, stay away from sun exposure or tanning beds for at least two weeks, as UV light can cause pigmentation issues. If you're heading outside, cover up your legs or use a high SPF sunscreen.
Some mild redness, tightness, or bruising is expected. The treated vein may feel like a firm cord under the skin – completely normal. Stick to your compression stockings, stay active with short walks, and elevate your legs when resting.
Things start to improve noticeably. Any tension or swelling begins to fade. Compression stockings may only be needed during the day. You can return to your usual daily activities and maybe light household chores.
The treated veins continue to fade, and any bruises or marks should be nearly gone. Skin tone evens out. Some patients experience temporary brownish spots, especially with deeper veins – these typically resolve on their own. Light exercise and travel are fine again. We’ll usually schedule a check-up appointment around this time to review your results.
Technology does a lot – but your body (and your habits) do the rest. Following your aftercare plan is the best way to ensure you get the smooth, healthy-looking legs you’re hoping for.
